VIM Clinic creates legacy as a teaching facility
The Volunteers in Medicine Clinic in Stuart, Florida, is participating in a community-based teaching model with the Florida State University of College of Medicine.

One day a week over the course of a year, students are mentored in the clinic, and get to see and experience medicine as it should be, where the patients come first and every person is treated with compassion and dignity.

Leading Healthy Lives

When obesity became a growing concern at the Viola Startzman Free Clinic, a VIM clinic in Wooster, Ohio, staff and volunteers created a program to help their patients take control of their lives.

Living Healthy Lives is a 6-month program offered to patients between 19 and 65 with body mass index of (BMI) of 29.9 or higher. The primary goals of the program are for patients to lose 10% of their total body weight, learn how to eat healthy, exercise, and incorporate stress reduction into their lives.

This program has had a significant impact on the lives of many patients, including Justin.

Consumers Prefer Hospitals Over Medical Centers

According to a new survey of 1,027 American adults, consumers look to hospitals over medical centers in terms of offering a wider range of services, delivering high-quality care, being on the cutting edge, and having expert physicians. Survey results were consistent across gender, age, income, race, region, educational levels, household income, and size of household.

Addressing Resource Gaps in the U.S. Health Care Safety Net

A recent study published by AmeriCares found that most free clinics have experienced an increase in patient visits in the past one to three years. And more than half of the clinics have turned away eligible patients due to resource constraints. Not only are clinics seeing an increase in the number of individual patients, they are also seeing a rise in the number of visits per patient as more and more patients are coming to clinics with multiple chronic conditions.
