VIM Clinics Partnering with Students

A number of clinics in the Volunteers in Medicine Alliance partner with their local college or university to provide training opportunities for their students. Nursing, PA, 4th-year medical and DO students are volunteering their time under the supervision of medical director and gaining valuable experience in VIM clinics. Likewise, non-medical students are also making valuable contributions and gaining practical hands-on experience through their local VIM clinic.

Students in the Medical Office Procedures Course at Peninsula College (PC) in Port Angeles, WA, have partnered with the Volunteers in Medicine of the Olympics (VIMO) to assist in the development of a clinic compliance manual. Under the direction of Jen Geaue, Coordinator of the Medical Assistant Program at PC and a VIMO Board member, students will help conceptualize what should be included in a VIMO compliance manual. The document will contain detailed information regarding the policies and procedures needed for clinic operation and will serve as a valuable training resource.

The PR Campaigns class taught by Joye Gordon at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kansas State University will be developing PR campaigns for the Flint Hills Community Clinic in Manhattan, KS. The project will examine fundraising, donations, and the overall branding of the clinic as well as other facets of promoting the clinic within the community.

Under the direction of Dr. Stacy Kovar, master’s students from the Enterprise Information Systems Assurance class within the College of Business Administration at Kansas State University will conduct a financial audit and assess the potential security risks in the areas of technology and HIPAA.
